Today I am excited to present something a little different. During my initial chat with Jason and Huyen, they told me the story of how they met and I immediately knew this would make an awesome short film and luckily they did too! The original story was awesome, but of course we had to construct into a story that would be based on the real events and work as a short film (bit hard to fit 3 years of story into 5 minutes of film!) so the challange was on. Jason got really onto it, sending me pictures of his ideas and props for the shoot and after many emails back and forth, the script was final script locked down. So now it was just up to me to show up, give them direction and get the shots!

The pre-wedding film was a little unconventional in that we shot this after their wedding day. We had only allocated one day to shoot but typical Melbourne weather put a dent in those plans, so we had to just break it up across two days. Both of Jason and Huyen were such troopers considering they had just had their full on wedding day and then the long hours for our love story shoot, I am sure they must have been pretty exhausted by the time they started their honeymoon!

I have to give a huge shout out to my friend Fabian who co-owns The Little Veggie Patch Co in Prahran. Fabian and his business parnter Mat basically saved our butt when one of the locations was no go, so with a quick change to the script , we got to shoot in their amazing shop. If you are thinking of growing your own fruit and vegetables, check them out online where they offer all sorts of things to help you get going, or drop in their store to pick up a copy of their fabulous book! Thanks again Fab & Mat!

I won’t say too much more as we still have Jason and Huyen’s wedding film to share early in the next year, so hope you enjoy our little short film.

- Peter

PS. Make sure you select HD and watch full screen for the full cinematic experience!

He calls her “B”, it’s really more of a letter than a word, but there is so much more behind this affectionate nickname Nicolai has for Bernadette. Through out the day, he chose many other words to describe her – caring, wonderful, dedicated. And luckily for Bernadette, these same words can be used to describe Nicolai, and we get to see evidence of this right from the start of his wedding day, when he made breakfast for everyone – always attentive to others, even though it was his wedding day.

Now if you are a regular to the Living Lens blog, you may be forgiven for thinking Bernadette looks familiar, and those with an eagle eye will recognize that she was the violinist featured in Jade & Adrian’s short film! I felt then it was only right to feature the quartet in this highlight – music is a very large part of her life, as I found out when her dad proudly talked about her various achievements as a musician.

The wedding day couldn’t have been more perfect; beautiful weather with an amazing ceremony location on the balcony at the Melbourne Town Hall, and the awesome backdrop of the Royal Exhibition Buildings for the photoshoot. But for me the highlight was their tea ceremony, which is traditionally held in the morning at the family homes, but in order to share this moment with their guests they choose to hold it at the reception venue. This to me, seems such a wonderful way to share such an important cultural experience.

All these words and moments shared just served to highlight to me, and to all their guests, the reasons why Bernadette & Nicolai love each other.

It was just under a year ago that I met Jade and Adrian, and I remember I thinking at the time that this couple were very articulate and had great confidence. These qualities were especially evident on their wedding day, as I was so blown away to see that they had actually memorised their wedding vows! No reading or prompting for these two, their words of love and commitment came straight from their hearts and minds. This is no mean feat on a crazy day such as this one, their wedding was truly jam packed! From getting ready in the suburbs, to a ceremony in the CBD at Wesley Church, a stop by at Tea House Chinatown, photos from Federation Square to the Ashcombe Maze and finishing of in the picturesque Port Phillip Estate, it was an epic day and a wonderful celebration.

And lucky for me, I got to work with the lovely Joanie from One Wedding Wish who organised the tea ceremony and a beautiful traditional chinese sweets. Also a shout out must go to David Fowler Photography who kept us entertained through out the day!

Jade and Adrian, I hope those heartfelt and beautiful vows that you spoke to each other on your wedding day continue to serve as a daily reminder of your commitment to each other for now and many, many years into the future.

You would have though middle of January would have been a safe bet for a garden wedding, but then again this was Melbourne where it’s the norm to experience four seasons in one day.

Obviously we had bought the Queensland rains and not the famous Queensland sunshine with us on the trip down and the morning of Sonia and Brett’s wedding day was bucketing down. Luckily nothing could phase these two, despite the heavy rain they were getting married! As a wise man once said “The bride, the groom and the celebrant – that’s all you need” Fortunately for Sonia and Brett, their family and friends were happy to brave the torrential rain to join them under the small marquee in the beautiful gardens of Cloudehill Nursery & Gardens in the Dandenongs.

With everyone cocooned under the marquee, the rain continued to pitterpatter on the canvas roof as Sonia and Brett share their words of love and commitment. After congratulations they braved the soggy grass and misty air to take advantage of the beautiful scenery and you can see the wonderful images captured by Sarah and Kim from Red Telegram. And in true Melbourne fashion, by the time the afternoon reception got underway at Wild Oak Restaurant in Olinda, the rain had cleared and warm summer sun appeared to oversee the celebrations.

Congratulations Sonia and Brett – come rain, hail or shine may you always be surrounded with love, happiness and family, whatever the weather.

~ Emily

With the average adult speaking about 16,000 words a day, it is easy to forget the power of the spoken word. Many couples spend hours planning the details of their wedding, only to use the traditional wedding vows, when this is there one chance to tell the world how they truly feel!

Celine and Michael took this opportunity, and standing between the flower beds of blooming roses at Werribee Mansion, they professed their love and commitment to each other. The words they choose spoke were of love, of giving, of appreciation and of joy. They voiced their hopes and dreams for their future life together and put it out into the world. And those there to witness understood the importance of those words, and the beauty of their meaning and instead of letting these words get lost in the wide world, everyone there took those words into their hearts.

I also want to thank Matt Barwick from Matt Barwick Films who was shooting with me on the day and Joanie Lim from One Wedding Wish who was so helpful and making sure we were accommodated for and the day ran super smoothly.

When I first spoke to Joanna, she said that she and Erick were quiet and didn’t talk much, but as I spend the day with them on their wedding, I could see that what they dont say in words, they more than make up for with small gestures, big smiles and lots of laughing – especially Joanna who just couldn’t help herself!

I can see why they chose to have their wedding at such wonderful location, it was a beautiful, intimate event with all the family staying at the picturesque Yerring Gorge Cottages and attending the ceremony at St Patrick’s Parish. After their beautiful lunch time reception at the Stones at Yarra, I got to spend a bit of time just hanging out and chatting with the two of them. Erick is so easy to warm and Joanna so welcoming, they made me feel like part of the family and I am so pleased to be able to give them this highlight, which I think really shows their wonderful connection with each other.

Being part of a Sri-Lankan Hindu wedding is an amazing experience, the colours, sounds and rituals are different, but just like all wedding ceremonies, it encapsulates the bringing together of two lives. It truly is a beautiful and meaningful way to enter into marriage, and I know these elements were important to Thami and Kav. From the outset it was so clear that this wedding was about more than the joining of these two, its was a day to honor their heritage and bring together family and friends to celebrate life.

A wedding spanning several days may have seemed like a daunting task when they began the journey of organsing the whole event but they embraced it as a challenge which they had enjoyed together, and this to me is the perfect start to a marriage. I want to thank Kav and Thami for the wonderful time and laughs we had together with them for the two days, and wish them the very best for their life together.

A game of tennis might not have been a traditional first date but it was a seed planted in Juliana’s mind that would change her forever and make Bruce a perfect fit for her.

It was a such pleasure sharing such a beautiful day with Juliana and Bruce and being there to capturing it all. In every interaction, their love was evident for all to see. The beautiful words of the celebrant really reflected their true nature; their joy in doing things together, the strength of their love and their commitment in making this journey as one.

They had a very lucky day as it was typical Melbourne weather, we just didn’t know if it was going to keep raining or shining! Fortunately as we made our way to Vines Restaurant at Helen’s Hill Estate, the heavens were with them, the rain had stopped and they were able to exchange vows in a beautiful setting with just the closest friends and family.

I had a blast shooting with Troy from Encore Media who flew down from Sydney to make this a memorable shoot, and I have to give him credit for getting those lovely rain shots!

A cloudy day in September is not uncommon for Melbourne, but seeing Tim’s face when he saw Melissa walking down the isle, these two radiated in the glow of their love. Melissa set a quick pace down the isle to meet Tim as he waited patiently at the alter, and when their eyes locked, they and everyone there knew that they were the one for each other. That they were their own personal sunshine to keep each other warm, safe and to help each other grow in their life together from this moment on.

I was so happy to be able to capture their day and for Melissa and Tim putting their faith in us to tell their story. I also had the privilege of working with Dean from Sauvignon Media Creations who had been a pleasure to shoot with.

Pam was once my boss, although when we worked together it was more like work mates – Friday night drinks, rock concerts and just having a good time at work, but there was one thing Pam was missing, which was the man that she had been looking for. Luckily it was not too long until Mal appeared and things started getting serious, Pam set about dropping what Mal called “not so subtle hints”. Fortunately a ring was presented and then they headed off on a 6 week trip to Europe to celebrate their engagement. It has been awesome to see their relationship blossom and has been so wonderful to be part of their wedding day and be able to capture it for them.

Now I was originally going to blog with a whole theme about St Kilda football team as both Pam and Mal are huge fans but as we know now, unfortunately the grand finals (re-match) game didn’t end so well so I hope this film can be something to cheer them up and remind them about their beautiful day instead.
